A note about illustrations of maps: The illustrations are provided as a guide only - magnification is not always practicable with early maps that are often faded or smudgy. Some of the images have been copied from small photographs of large maps. However, in some examples enlargement in sections has been possible and a note in the caption indicates this.

The sub-headings provide the name of the publisher, the original surveyor or compiler, the year the survey was made or the map was compiled, the area, and the year of publication. All the plates used in printing the maps listed in this chapter were prepared by John Arrowsmith.

The London map publisher, John Arrowsmith (1790-1873), first became associated with New Zealand maps in 1837. He prepared a large number of maps of New Zealand and parts of New Zealand, many of which were hand-tinted lithographs for publication in British Parliamentary Papers.  He also produced maps for several books, and maps for illustrating papers in The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society.

The first issue was published as a single-sheet map although it is possible only proof sheets were printed. compare the map Map Arr 1,  with Arrowsmith’s map of 1841. (immediately

above)

The map of 1837,  prepared  from data supplied by Edward Gibbon

Wakefield, was modelled on the McDonnell-Wyld map of 1834. (see ......

By 1841,  Arrowsmith had taken a special interest in New Zealand

and abandoned the McDonnell-Wyld concept. His general map of

1841 was the resultof an enormous amount of careful analysis o

data obtained froma number of sources.
