Bayview Chateau Tongariro, Mount Ruapehu

Completed in 1929, the Mount Ruapehu Bayview Chateau Tongariro

is one of the most luxurious hotels in New Zealand. It makes a

memorable addition to any North Island self-drive itinerary. In the winter,

the hotel is a base for skiing and snow activities. At other times of the year

guests can enjoy hiking, trout fishing and horse riding. [L144]

Some illustrations and captions to follow.

A note about illustrations of maps: The illustrations are provided as a guide only - magnification is not always practicable with early maps that are often faded or smudgy. Some of the images have been copied from small photographs of large maps. However, in some examples enlargement in sections has been possible and a note in the caption indicates this.

the majority  of the maps published in British Parliamentary papers  during the period under review are listed in Chapter 9 under the heading  “Maps by John Arrowsmith.” The maps prepared by other cartographers or engravers for British Parliamentary Papers, listed below, are additional to the maps by Arrowsmith.

Standidge & Co. prepared the following two maps which are found in British Parliamentary Papers.

 Auckland. J. Basire, Litho. 569.  ...  1842.  ...”  Published in, BPP

1842, xxviii (569) p. 136

Remarks: Map of part of central Auckland, London, 1842 (BPP).

This interesting plan of the eastern side of the central Auckland city area emphasizes the line of the original shoreline which is today a considerable distance behind  reclaimed land. The un-named stream which is shown running the length of lower Queen Street and turning east became known as the Ligar Canal.
