NB The sub-headings provide the name of the engraver, surveyor or compiler, the year the map was prepared, the area, and the year of publication. 

 

A note about illustrations of maps: The illustrations are provided as a guide only - magnification is not always practicable with early maps that are often faded or smudgy. Some of the images have been copied from small photographs of large maps. However, in some examples enlargement in sections has been possible and a note in the caption indicates this.

the English publisher, Smith, Elder & Co., 65 Cornhill, London, was associated with a number of New Zealand Company books and maps around 1840. Some of the maps listed in this chapter are found in books published by Smith, Elder & Company for the New Zealand Company; others were published as single-sheet maps.

Brees’ name is not included but almost certainly this printed work was modelled on a survey-plan or plans prepared by S. C. Brees.

Remarks:.Some of the names in this plan  relate to the first immigrant ships. The original party of Nelson settlers, under the direction of Captain Arthur Wakefield, arrived in the three ships, Whitby, Will Watch, and Arrow, on 9 October 1841.

The first number of The New Zealand Journal was published on 8 February 1840 by Henry Hobbs Chambers, at the office of the “New Zealand Journal,” 366, Strand, London. The next entry provides details of the map included in the initial issue:
