Chapter 13,

Colonial lithographers as mapmakers

  Edited

   By
Brian Hooker

NB.  The sub-headings provide the name of the engraver, surveyor or compiler, the year the map was prepared, the area, and the year of publication.

A note about illustrations of maps: The illustrations are provided as a guide only - magnification is not always practicable with early maps that are often faded or smudgy. Some of the images have been copied from small photographs of large maps. However, in some examples enlargement in sections has been possible and a note in the caption indicates this.

(Continued from Chapter 12

lithographic printing commenced in Australia about 1821, and in New Zealand, the first lithographic press was operated by Thomas Bluett who arrived in Wellington on board the Olympus, in early 1843. Some of the early printing craftsmen are known to have been skilled copper plate engravers but no early examples of maps printed from copper plates in New Zealand or Australia, have been found.

Irish-born William Keller Baker, arrived at Sydney in early 1835. He set up a printing establishment known as the “Hibernian Press,” at 101 King Street, Sydney, NSW.

Little is known about the “Courier Office,” Hobart; however, the map bears a legend

indicating that it was printed by lithography at the “Courier Office,

 Hobart Town, VDL”  [Tasmania].

Raphael Clint (1797-1849), established a printing and engraving business in Sydney in 1835. Clint modeled his New Zealand maps on published works but he failed to acknowledge his sources. Clumsily drawn, Clint’s maps contain useful information. Nine of Clint’s maps have been traced and there is every possibility that other prints will come to light in time.

An original print has not been found but a reproduction is included in, L.E. Ward (Comp.) Early Wellington  (Wellington: Whitcombe & Tombs, 1927). The plan is modelled to a large degree on W. M. Smith’s plan of 1840 (see the entry, Map Smi 9, in Chapter 11).

Robert Park (18123-70), arrived in Wellington, in April  1840, and took employment under William Mein Smith as an assistant surveyor for the New Zealand Company. In 1842, Park produced several lithographs on his own account, including two different plans  each with the same title as given in the following entries. The only examples known are preserved in the Hocken Library, University of Otago, Dunedin.
